Pregnancy and Oral Health: Tips for pregnant women

Oral health during pregnancy affects the fetus health directly. The inflammation of the mother’s gum may affect the fetus growth. Inflammations such as teeth caries, periodontal inflammation and bleeding and oral ulcerations cause secreting hormones as same as the hormones secreted at birth. 

Seeing a dentist after 3 months of pregnancy is necessary to avoid the hormonal changes that happen as a result for the oral inflammations. 

Oral and dental problems affects the fetus in these ways; the fetus might be infected by the mother’s oral inflammations, scientists related the kids’ teeth caries problems to those inflammations. Thus, it is very important for mothers to keep their gum good during pregnancy. These inflammations also may cause premature birth and the decrease of the baby’s weight at birth. 

The mothers can prevent the oral problems by examining their teeth at the beginning of the pregnancy, and doing what is needed to cure the gum inflammations and teeth caries, brushing their teeth regularly to avoid the accumulation of tartar and plaque. Seeing a dentist after 3 months of pregnancy is necessary to avoid the hormonal changes that happen as a result for the oral inflammations. Mothers should depend on eating fresh vegetables and fruits, dairies, and eating foods that are rich with fibers like cereals. 

It is important for mothers to drink enough amounts of water during pregnancy to keep the health of mouth, teeth and gum good. If the mother has sensitive teeth, she should use a teeth brush with soft bristles. Self-treating at home is not preferred during pregnancy; it would be much better if mothers saw a dentist and followed the medical advices he tells.
