Dr.Khaled Al Zahrany: 5 billion riyals is the size of plastic surgery market in Saudi Arabia in 2015

Saudi doctors said that the size of plastic surgery will expand from 4 billion riyals in 2014 to 5 billion riyals in 2015 and 2016 specially in the first half of the year in summer holidays as the annual increase is 15 %.

They also warned from people demand on unqualified doctors in this field as there is about 10% medical mistakes in their operations as this type of operations are risky and critical and need to be held by qualified doctors only.

According to statistics held by International Association of Plastic Surgery, Saudi Arabia came in first position among the Arab world in number of plastic surgery operations, it was noticed the excessive demand among the Saudis on these operations specially Saudi women  between 19-30 years.

For the non surgical plastic surgery in Saudi Arabia, fat injection in face and hair removal by laser came in first places, while for surgical plastic surgery, rhinoplasty , facelift and liposuction occupy the first places, on the worldwide scale, there are about 19 million plastic surgery most of them are wrinkles removal and hair lengthen besides the usage of 3 million Botox injections annually .

Dr.Khaled Ben Gamaan Al Zahrany (member of American association of plastic surgery) said that Saudi Arabia came first among other 25 Arab countries in using plastic surgery as 141 operations were held in 2010 and doubled to 282 operations in 2014.

  Dr.Al Zahrany confirmed that the size of plastic surgery market including devices , hospitals , elements , specialists exceed 4 billion riyals, expecting it to be elevated because of the increasing demand, as Al Riyadh dominates the size of market by 70% then Jeddah by 25% then the East Area by 5%.

According to doctors, the real reason for the increased demand on this field is the elevated Saudi awareness of these operations and its types yet its still immature awareness as they are ignorant of the risks and dangerous complications that may yield after those operations as 10% of medical mistakes is after the operation while doctors of this field seeks only for money and they are aided by the enormous media advertisement for this field.

Doctors confirm that those operations shouldn’t be held for those who are -18 years old and people should take care before taking decision to use this field, for example : rhinoplasty shouldn’t be held for those who are -18 as their face bones are still in growth phase, breast operations shouldn’t be held for those who are   -25 while liposuction shouldn’t be held for those who are +30.

Specialists say that formerly those operations were held only for those who are +40 but nowadays it is held for those who are +18 till 65 years old, according to statistics those who are between 18-28 are using waist carving, abdomen muscle stretching and rhinoplasty, while  those who are between 28-35 from both sexes undergoes non surgical facelift and liposuction, women demand increases to use this field after the age of 35 as its usually the end of pregnancy and labor phase.

  One third of Saudi women use plastic surgery, according to Saudi statistics third of Saudi women undergoes breast reduction , skin tightening , hair transplantation and liposuction, usually during vacancies , weddings and summer time.

According to a study held in Riyadh about women interest in plastic surgery, 25%of them have an urgent need toward plastic surgery as they are wealthy and being able to afford those fancy operations.

Medical surveys says that nose comes in first place among plastic surgery field in Arab world specially in Saudi Arabia as it reaches 90% of total operations held daily.

Dr.Mohamed Deeb Eid (Founder of the Saudi Scientific Association for Plastic Surgery) explains 90% of plastic surgery operations in Arab world is Rhinoplasty, as the Arab nose is huge , wide and has thick texture.

He said : Recently, there has been a new technique introduced in facelift that was used in Saudi Arabia for the first time under the effect of local anesthetic through a tiny opening instead of the common threads technique.

Plastic surgery was used for the sake of fixing deforms and damages resulted from accidents , it was used for the first time by the Indians by using skin grafts in the 18^th century BC till the 18^th century AD , the Romans also used plastic surgery in fixing ears in the 1^st century BC.
