A Saudi patient in her eighth decade of life gets a medical clip for mitral valve impairment

A medical team from (The Prince Salman Center of medicine and cardiac surgery) in King Fahd Medical City managed to install medical clip for Mitral valve impairment for a Saudi patient in her eighth decade of life, in an operation described as rare, due to late age of the patient and without surgical intervention.

Dr Fawaz Al-Metairie ( A consultant cardiologist and head of the medical team, the head of the Cardiac catheterization for geriatric center) said that the patient was suffering from dyspnea and fatigue. After subjected to advanced investigations and perform esophageal Echocardiography showing severe mitral regurge; which requires urgent surgical intervention to repair or replace the valve with a prosthetic or organic valve by open-heart surgery, but due to the serious complications of open-heart surgery in such late-Age,medical team decided to perform valve repair via modern technique "Mitral Clamp " which is less serious to improve the performance of mitral valve.

But now how the mitral clamp done?
Consultant Cardiologist Dr Al-Metairie said: It is done by  introduction of a catheter into the right femoral vein through slot of no more than 5 millimeters, This is where the catheter delivered to the heart through the right atrium, then doctor made an opening in atrial septa to reach the left atrium, and then put a guiding metal wire, Then withdraw the catheter and to keep the metal wire in the left atrium, after that he introduce the guiding catheter into the left atrium and  withdraw the metal wire.

Mitral valve impairment
He added: that "The medical team introduces the catheter-bearing clamp towards the regurgitating valve guided by esophageal Echocardiography and ultrasound to explore the defected side of valve then implant the clamp into the valvular cusps to minimize the regurgitation down to medically accepted level then withdraw the catheter.

Dr. Fawaz Al-Metairie said: Medical clamp technique is one of the modern techniques which approved by the European Commission for the Accreditation of medical treatment, for patients who suffer from severe regurgitation in this valve and  is difficult to perform traditional surgery for them due to the serious complications, Pointing out that it is a complementary therapy beside surgical operations and is not a substitute for them, Especially for patients with high-risk and have the valves suitable for the clamp. This complicated operation is available only in advanced centers in the world.

According to Dr. Fawaz Al-Metairie, the patient's condition is stable and able to get out of the hospital. He pointed out that the cardiac catheterization's result show that her arteries free of any blockages.

Dr. Mohammed Qudiah consultant cardiac surgery, and Dr. Magdy Ismail consultant cardiac imaging shared in this operation by a great role.
