Ali Al-Zawawi (General Director of the medical licenses and pharmacy affairs at the Ministry of Health) said in an interview to the Middle East Newspaper that any medication that may cause addiction not only prescription drugs but also The drugs that are sold without a prescription,which is called «Over the counter drugs».Misuse of them or not is according to patient awareness and self-control, ts side effects might lead to what called psychological addiction which affect them badly, so it is necessary to educate the community as a whole and especially the patient.
He added: «At the same time, some of the drugs that have been authorized for use without prescriptions such as some cough medicines or some painkillers was withdrawn from the market. There is a specialized committee to regularly monitor pharmacies, and When there is evidence of any case of violation like dispensing drugs requires a prescription,the case is confirmed and referred to the Committee of Medical violations and the penalty start from five thousand riyals, and up to the closure of the pharmacy.
Dr Mohammed Saeed Al-Ghamdi, a family medicine consultant and general supervisor of the site of the Saudi Family and Community Medicine, said in an interview to the Middle East Newspaper: «The assembly seeks to educate physicians and patients through the media and educational and scientific pamphlets,due to the sensitivity of this subject», pointing out that a large number of authorities involved in the follow-up this serious issue.
Al-Ghamdi added that medicine is the main tool used by the physician.Therefore doctor must be qualified and have the ability to prescribe the medicine,has knowledge of proper dosage and familiarity with all conditions of the prescription,because some medical errors may cause complications up to death. and he should educate the patient about medicine and its doses, timing and other things and for the patient, he simply should commitment to the instructions of the doctor and not to buy drugs without a prescription to avoid serious risks. He attributed the cause of spread of health problems due to the misuse of drugs and medicines,to pharmacies spread and the pharmacists lead role of doctor because of the lack of adequate health centers. As example, Jeddah has 40 medical centers only to meet needs of 3 million people. So the patient goes to pharmacists for medical advice instead of doctors.
On the other hand misuse of drugs is associated with serious complications and requires some time to treat its side effects such as psychological addiction.
